Darley Stud wins the
Breeders' Cup Juvenile

DARLEY STUD's purchase of Bob and Janice McNair’s Stonerside Stable paid off in spades when Midshipman, bought as part of the package deal by Sheikh Mohammed's stud in September 2007, won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

The deal included a 2,000-acre farm in Paris, Kentucky, the training center in Aiken, South Carolina, approximately 170 broodmares, yearlings, and weanlings  as well as about 80 horses in training.

Through September after the deal was confirmed, Midshipman won the Del Mar Futurity-Gr1 and then Norfolk Stakes-Gr1.

He is by Unbridled's Song, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and sire of nine Grade 1 winners and 29 Graded stakes winners.

The stallion's daughter out of Silk Cat was the joint second-best price at the Keeneland September sales in 2008 and was bought by John Ferguson, who in a post-race TV interview was not to be drawn on future plans for Midshipman.

Midshipman is the fifth foal out of Fleet Lady, a stakes winner on the dirt, and is a half-brother to the nine-time winner, including once at Grade 2 level. Granddam Dear Mimi is half-sister to Prix de la Foret-Gr1 winner, Salse.
