Antonius Pius
off the mark

METAL Soldier gave the Group 1-placed Antonius Pius his first winner as a stallion when quickening up the rail to deny Reel Credit Crunch by a length in the 5f maiden at Chester.

Trained by John Quinn, who gave €10,000 for him at the Goffs Million Sale last year, the colt is the fourth foal out of the placed Night Shift mare Shenkara and a half-brother to the Listed-placed juvenile Crocodile Bay. He was retained for €19,000 as a foal by breeders James and Joe Branngian.

Metal Soldier is the sixth runner in Britain and Ireland for the talented but quirky Antonius Pius, who stands at Coolmore for €5,000. The son of Danzig registered his most notable win in the Group 2 Railway Stakes as a two-year-old but ran placed in three Group 1 events including the Breeders' Cup Mile. He has 125 two-year-olds to run for him this year.
