Medaglia colt tops sticky Canadian Select Sale

A SON of Medaglia d'Oro topped the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's (CTHS) Canadian-bred Selected Yearling Sale in Ontario on Tuesday when selling to Lana Sniderman for C$155,000 (£86,792/€98,764).

Unsurprisingly, the sale suffered losses across-the-board, with 155 yearlings selling for a total of C$4,672,000, a drop of 15  per cent, and an average of C$30,142 (£16,877/€19,203), a drop of 18 per cent. The median fell 19 per cent to C$22,000 (£12,318/€14,016).

However, the clearance rate remained virtually static at 69.5 per cent.

Gail Woods' Woodlands agency consigned the sale-topping colt, who is a half-brother to the 2002 Canadian champion three-year-old colt Le Cinqueime Essai and out of the Regal Classic mare Words Of Royalty.

Four other yearlings reached the C$100,000 (£55,998/€63,711) mark including two colts from the first crop of Grade 2 winner Survivalist, who were knocked down to agent Brian Lynch, acting on behalf of Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, and trainer Roger Attfield.

Another first crop sire, Grade 2 winner Strut The Stage, was also represented by a C$100,000 yearling, a colt from Richard G. Hogan's consignment who was sold to F. Annecchini and R. D'Alimonte. A son of North Light from Susan Y. Foreman was also snapped up for the same amount by Bear Stables.

The open session of the CTHS yearling will be staged on Saturday.
