Medaglia colt sets sale record at £130,000

EUROPE'S first breeze-up of the year, Goffs' fixture at Kempton, gave hope to those selling up the various upcoming juvenile sales with a record high price and its best set of figures since 2008.

The sale, held for a fifth time yesterday, had moved to later in March from its original date before Cheltenham and - after a testing renewal 12 months ago - it bounced back to see turnover rocket by 85 per cent to £1,600,500. The £25,008 average was up 56 per cent and the £20,000 median by 60 per cent.

The 78 per cent clearance rate (up from 67 per cent) was one of the most welcome advances, as vendors spoke of a marketplace with trade at all levels.

The sale record of £110,000, set in 2007, was bettered by £20,000 courtesy of a US-bred Medaglia D'Oro colt who appeared from Willie Browne's Mocklershill Stables, having been picked up for £50,000 at Doncaster last August.

He is set to race for similar connections to Kempton breeze-up graduate Fat Boy, who ran in Maurice Sines' colours, after the owner's son Fred - stood with advisor Kerri Radcliffe - fought off first Bobby O'Ryan and then David Redvers for the February-born youngster.
