Montjeu pulls off Anglo-Irish Leger double

COOLMORE sire Montjeu continued a brilliant year by supplying winners of both the English and Irish St Legerson Saturday.

One son of Montjeu, Masked Marvel, set a new course record when storming away from footballer Michael Owen’s homebred son of Shirocco Brown Panther at Doncaster, and less than an hour later another, Jukebox Jury, dead-heated with Duncan (Dalakhani) at the Curragh.

Montjeu, who stood at a fee of €75,000 this year, has been in flying form this season withDerby hero Pour Moi, Ascot Gold Cup winner Fame And Glory and Coronation Cup scorer St Nicholas Abbey all representing him.

Masked Marvel was bred by Newsells Park Stud out of Waldmark, a daughter of Mark Of Esteem who won over 7f at two and was second in the Falmouth Stakes (then Group 2) at three.

Waldmark is a half-sister to this year’s Deutsches Derby winner Waldpark and to two other black-type performers - Waldvogel (a Listed winner over 1m3f at three and now a smart handicapper for Nicky Richards) and Waldjagd (placed over 1m2f in Group 2 company in Germany at three).

Another sister, Waldbeere, produced German multiple Group 3 winner Wiesenpfad. Waldmark’s dam, Wurftaube, won the German St Leger

Masked Marvel was bred by Newsells Park Stud and sold by the Hertfordshire operation to Jeremy Brummitt for 260,000eurosat the 2009 Arqana August Yearling Sale in Deauville. Newsells are enjoying a vintage year, having also bred stakes winners February Sun, Gerfalcon, Gitano Hernando, Miss Work Of Art, Ocean War and St Moritz.

Jukebox Jury was bred by Paul Nataf out of the Kenmare mare Mare Aux Fees, making him a three-parts brother to this season's Lingfield Derby Trial runner-up Hurricane Higgins (HurricaneRun) and a half-brother to stakes performers Belle Allure, Le Larron, Pierrot Solaire and The Mask

Duncan, meanwhile, becomes the fifth Group 1 winner sired by Dalakhani after Chinese White (Pretty Polly Stakes), Conduit (St Leger, King George and two Breeders’ Cup Turfs), Moonstone (Irish Oaks) and Reliable Man (Prix du Jockey Club).

Duncan´s dam, Dolores, is turning into a brilliant producer for Normandie stud. She is by top sprinter-miler Danehill and she excelled over 1m, finishing a close fourth in Kazzia´s 1,000 Guineas and third in the Coronation Stakes. She is a half-sister to 1m2f winner Rachel and out of a half-sister to high-class miler Wavy Run..

Dolores has produced three black-type performers from onlyfour foals to have run: Samuel, by Sakhee, won the Group 2 Doncaster Cup over 2m2f and Deirdre, by Dubawi, was third in the Listed Height of Fashion Stakes over 1m1f.
