Record Marmalade colt tops final MM session

A FIRST crop son of Coolmore shuttler Duke of Marmalade set a new record during the general session of the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast, Australia, on Friday, selling for A$75,000 (£48,665/€56,245).

Magic Millions as agent signed for the colt on behalf of a Queensland-based buyer. Consigned by Superior Thoroughbreds as one of the last lots of the day, the chestnut colt is the fourth living foal of winning Royal Academy mare Celestia and a half-brother to two minor winners.

It was a big drop downto the second dearest lot of the day, a son of Vinery stallion Dubleo who was knocked down for A$37,000 to Magic Millions as agent on behalf of a South Australian-based buyer.

An increase in the number of lots sold from 77 to 91 contributed to a 39 per cent rise in aggregate to A$442,200. The average rose 17 per cent to A$4,859 while the clearance rate remained strong at 83 per cent.

"It turned out to be a very good session's selling," said Vin Cox, managing director of Magic Millions.

"After a couple of tough sessions on Wednesday and Thursday it was nice to see some good competition around the ring today.

"To have the clearance rate well over 80 per centis most pleasing as well."
