Goulash, dam of champion Ashado, dies

GOULASH, dam of Grade 1 winners Ashado and Sunriver, was put down on Wednesday at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky after developing severe laminitis in her right front foot.

The 16-year-old daughter of Mari's Book showed useful form during her racing career, winning the 1996 Las Ninas Stakes at Fairplex and retiring with six victories from 12 starts for earnings of $162,975.

However, Goulash's record at stud outshone her achievements on the track. Purchased for $100,000 by Taylor Made on behalf of Aaron and Marie Jones at the 1998 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, she went on to produce 10 foals.

The best of her progeny was undoubtedly Ashado, a daughter of Saint Ballado who won seven Grade 1 races between the ages of two and four. A champion at three and four, she broke the world record for a broodmare prospect when purchased by Sheikh Mohammed for $9 million at the 2005 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

Ashado's brother Sunriver captured the Grade 1 Hollywood Turf Cup at the age of four in 2007. Another brother, Saint Stephen, won the Grade 3 Native Diver Handicap at Hollywood Park in 2006 and currently stands in Canada.

Goulash provided her connections with handsome paydays at the sales when at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale her yearling filly by Forestry was sold to Ashado's trainer Todd Pletcher for $600,000, and last month when, at the same sale, DemiO'Byrne paid $925,000 for her final product, a colt by Unbridled's Song.

Goulash will be buried at Taylor Made Farm.
