950,000gns for mare in foal to Sea The Stars

THE first mare offered at the sale in foal to Sea The Stars, Soinlovewithyou (1417), narrowly fails to break the seven-figure mark, selling for 950,000gns to Hugo Lascelles.

Auctioneer Philip Myerscough opened the bidding at 200,000gns in front of a packed yet silent sales ring, after which Ted Voute and Charlie Gordon-Watson cut out much of the early running. Lascelles entered the fray at 575,000gns and in the end found his strongest competition arising from Seamus Burns of Lodge Park Stud and Australian agent Tim Stakemire, who acts on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum.

Consigned by Highclere Stud, the five-year-old daughter of Sadler's Wells is a half-sister to Duke Of Marmalade and won once as a two-year-old.

"She's been bought to go to America for an owner-breeder in Kentucky," said Lascelles. "They are racing people but they could easily bring back the Sea The Stars foal here."

Japanese buyers dominated the early hours of the first session of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, with Northern Farm paying 375,000gns for Belle Allure (1328) and Tetsuya Yoshida of Shadai Farm going to 300,000gns for Limelight (1296).

Fumihko Nakajina of Northern Farm had to fight off Patrick Cooper of BBA Ireland and Toyomitsu Hirai of Eishin Farm for Belle Allure, a Group 3-winning half-sister to Preis von Europa winner Jukebox Jury. The five-year-old daughter of Numerous is theonly mare catalogued in foal to Giant's Causeway.

"She's a lovely mare with a lovely pedigree and she'll be taken back to Japan to foal," said Nakajina. "I don't know who she'll go to but we have a lot of stallions to choose from."

Limelight, a Dalakhani half-sister to Aussie Rules, is the latest in a string of recent high-profile acquisitions for the Yoshida family's Shadai Farm following the $1.85 million purchase of Blind Luck's dam, Lucky One, at Keeneland and that of Group 1 winner Serious Attitude at Fasig-Tipton for the same amount.
