First winner by Ghostzapper lands stakes

US HORSE Of The Year Ghostzapper received his first winner in dramatic fashion on Saturday when Golden Ghost dead-heated with Toboggan Slide in the 5f First State Dash Stakes at Delaware Park.

The pair finished five-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of the third placed horse in the $75,000 stakes races, which was restricted to Delaware-bred or certified two-year-olds.

It was the third start for Golden Ghost, who is trained by Michael Gorham and races in the colours of owner and breeder Steeplechase Farms. He isthe second foal out of Grade 1 Ruffian Handicap heroine Mandy's Gold, a Gilded Time half-sister to the useful German sprinter Matula.

Ghostzapper earned Horse Of The Year honours in 2004 for owner Frank Stronach following an outstanding season in which he captured the Breeders' Cup Classic by three lengths and Grade 1 Woodward Stakes over Saint Liam.

He was also successful in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on his only start as a five-year-old and retired to stand alongside his sire, Awesome Again, at Adena Springs in Kentucky as the winner of nearly $3.5m in earnings.

Golden Ghost is one of ten runners from 85 first crop two-year-olds by Ghostzapper, who stood his first season at a fee of $200,000. He stood the past season for $125,000.
