Makybe Diva's dam to return to Desert King

MAKYBE owners Tony and Deslee Santic have confirmed that they would be returning Tugela , the dam of the triple Melbourne Cup winning legend Makybe Diva, to Diva's sire, Desert King.

Tugela is the dam of four individual stakes performers which have a combined total of 28 wins - 13 at Group and Listed level - and amassed more than $15 million in prize-money.

Tugela’s progeny include Makybe Diva, who it was recently announced has produced a Lonhro foal, Musket (Redoute's Choice), Valkyrie Diva (Jade Robbery), and Shadowofexcellence (Redoute's Choice).

Santic bought Tugela through bloodstock agent John Foote in foal to Desert King for 60,000gns at the December 1998 Tattersall's Sale. 

"We have always intended on returning Tugela to Desert King and given they are both currently in Victoria, now's the perfect time. A full brother or sister to the Diva running around will be exciting and something to look forward to," said Santic to

The Santic’s are planning to send Makybe Diva to champion sprinter Starspangledbanner, who stands at Coolmore, to be covered this spring.

The mare's first foal was a 2007 colt by Galileo. She then had a 2008 Fusaichi Pegasus filly, a colt by Encosta De Lago in 2009, was empty in 2010 before producing this year's Lonhro colt.
