Mixed day for Shadwell at Maisons-Laffitte

IT was a case of win one, lose one for Shadwell at Maisons-Laffitte on Thursday when their private purchase Joanna lowered the colours of Special Duty in Prix Imprudence minutes after Makfi, whom the operation sold lastyear, landed the Prix Djebel.

Joanna's half-length success over Evading Tempete in the Prix Imprudence saw her become the second credible Guineas contender by High Chaparral following recent Leopardstown scorer Noll Wallop. Sheikh Hamdan purchased Joanna privately from Allevamento Dei Sette prior to her engagement in last year's Arqana Saint-Cloud Arc Horses in Training Sale.

Bred by Giovanni Faldutto in Ireland, the filly is the only stakes winner out Secrete Marina, a Listed-placed daughter of Mujadil from the famous Wildenstein family of Aquarelliste and Arcangues.

Shadwell Estate Company bred the Prix Djebel scorer Makfi out of an unraced half-sister to Alhaarth. The colt, who is the fifth stakes winner by second crop sire Dubawi, never made it to the track last year for Marcus Tregoning and consequently was sold for just 26,000gns to H B Bloodstock at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in October.
