O'Reilly gelding lands New Zealand Group 1

MACO'REILLY, a five-year-old son of O'Reilly, made a successful step-up to Group 1 weight-for-age company with an all-the-way victory in the 1m2f Whakanui Stud International Stakes at Te Rapa in New Zealand today.

The five-year-old son of O'Reilly had just enough in reserve to repel the favourite, three-year-old Tell A Tale (Tale Of The Cat), by a short head. Veloce Bella (Volksraad) was third.

"He's as tough as they get this bloke - he just loves a dogfight," said winning trainer David Haworth.

A 16-year-old son of Last Tycoon, O'Reilly stands at Waikato Stud in Matamata, New Zealand. His best progeny to date includes Caulfield Cup winner Master O'Reilly, last year's triple Group 1 winner Alamosa, and WATC Derby winner Guyno.

He also sired the dams of New Zealand 2,000 Guineas winner The Pooka and New Zealand 1,000 Guineas winner Daffodil.

His stud fee for the 2008 southern hemisphere breeding season was NZ$60,000 (£21,250 / €24,600).
