One-two for Germany in Caulfield Group 2
GERMAN-BREDS ruled the roost in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield in Australia on Saturday, with Lucas Cranach beating compatriot Illo by one and a half lengths.
Former Luca Cumani inmate Manighar, a French-bred son of Linamix, was third in the 1m1f race.
Lucas Cranach won the Group 2 Hansa-Preis at Hamburg last June and, after being switched to Australian trainer Anthony Freedman, was a close third in the Melbourne Cup.
The five-year-old was bred by Gestüt Graditz and is by the stud's former stallion Mamool, a Group 1-winning son of In The Wings who now stands at Gestüt Römerhof.
He is one of four winners out of the Listed-winning Java Gold mare Lots Of Love, a daughter of the Group 3-placed Acatenango mare Lost Love.
Illo won the Listed Jubiläumscup at Cologne last July and finished 19th in the Melbourne Cup after being switched to Bart Cummings.
He was bred by Gestüt Schlenderhan and is by the stud's stallion Tertullian, a son of Miswaki who is also sire of German and Hong Kong Group 2 scorer Irian.
Illo is out of the Konigsstuhl mare Iora, who also produced Preis der Diana winner Iota and Listed scorer Ionnanina.
