Loss of Lawyer Ron felt with exploits of Drill

San Vicente Stakes(Grade 2), 3yo, 7f

DRILL (c Lawyer Ron x Cat Dancer by Storm Cat)

Bred by Stonewall Farm Stallions

A REMINDER of what might have been was handed to Stonewall Stallions on Sunday as Bob Baffert's Drill narrowly held off American Act to win the San Vicente Stakes.

Back to winning ways following disappointingshows in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and CashCall Futurity, last year's Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity hero is from the first of two crops by the 2007 Grade 1 Whitney and Woodward Stakes winner Lawyer Ron. The son of Langfuhr succumbed to colic at Stonewall Farm in Kentucky in July 2009.

Drill is the best of three stakes winners from the stallion's first crop.

Drill is the second Kentucky Derby trial winner bred by Stonewall Farm Stallions this month following last Saturday's Hutcheson Stakes scorer Thunder Moccasin, a son of resident stallion A P Warrior.

He is the most expensive by his sire to have sold at auction, realising $300,000 to the bid of Mourning Wood Farm at the 2010 Keeneland September Sale. A half-brother to minor winner D'oro Dancer, he is out of the winning Storm Cat mare Cat Dancer, a sister to Grade 2 winner Magic Storm.

Further back, itis the family of champion Classic winners Chateaugay and Little Current, as well as leading young sire Hard Spun.
