LORD SHANAKILL (4yo b/br c Speightstown - Green Room, by Theatrical)

Breeder: Vimal Khosla, Gillian Khosla et al

BETFAIR Cup hero Lord Shanakill may carry a USA suffix, but the story behind his breeding comes from closer to home.

The son of Speightstown - whosaw off Cat Junior by a head to win the Betfair Cup - was bred by Vimal and Gillian Khosla, British-based owner-breeders whose familiar blue, grey and yellow silks have been carried with distinction by Mac Love, Royal Destination and Tournedos, in partnership with Caroline Green, owner of Templeton Stud in Berkshire.

Lord Shanakill is out of the Theatrical mare Green Room, who was purchased by Green with the Betfair Cup winner in-utero for $240,000 from the 2006 Keeneland Janaury horses of all ages sale.

Green Room is a granddaughter of blue hen Chain Store, best known as the dam of Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Al Bahathri, but also at the head of a family that keeps coming up with top performers - Al Bahathri's sonHaafhd, this season's Musidora Stakes winner Aviate, Santa Anita Handicap scorer Heatseeker and top three-year-old Hearts Of Fire, to name a few.

Green Room is also dam of this season's dual winner Brannagh (by Hennessy), a two-year-old colt by Dixie Union and a yearling filly by Lemon Drop Kid.

Lord Shanakill - a Group 2 winner at two and winner of the Prix Jean Prat last year at three - was purchased as a yearling by BBA Ireland for $110,000 at the Keeneland September sale.
