Lellouche and Castus double up with Magadan

Report: France, Monday

Longchamp: Prix d'Hedouville (Group 3) 4yo +, 1m4f

ELIE LELLOUCHE, Anthony Crastus and a representative of the Wildenstein Stable were again in the winner's enclosure after the Prix d'Hedouville where the favourite Magadan was brought with a storming late challenge in the straight to win by two lengthsfrom Coastal Path (gave 7lbs), Winkle and the ex-Argentine Candy Gift.

Magadan is now unbeaten in two races this season and he is going from strength to strength. He was one of the last going into the straight but Crastus was as cool as a cucumber and did not ask him a for a final effort before the furlong and a half marker. The son of High Chapparal then lengthened his stride and cut down his rivals.

"I have to say, he was impressive today," said Lellouche. "He likes to run like that, coming with a late run in a race which has gone at a true pace.

"The colt has definitely improved from three to four and Crastus rides him with confidence as he knows him so well. The plan now is to run Magadan in the Grand Prix de Chantilly and then the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud."

Judging by the way the horse is going he may well turn out to be a serious candidate for the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at the end of the year.
Coastal Path also put up a fine performance. Khalid Abdullah's colt had not been out since taking third place in the Prix Kergorlay after taking a similar position in the Ascot Gold Cup.

On this occasion he really made an impression over a mile and a half and was running on well in the final stages. Abdullah's French representative Claude Beniada said: "It was an excellent seasonal reappearance and he was giving threekilos to the winner."

The Abdullah camp appear to have two options - to prepare him for another tilt at the Ascot Gold Cup or to continue running him over a mile and a half, which might be a worthwhile idea after his Hedouville performance.
