Arqana December Yearling comparative figures (€)

Year  Off  Sold  % sold  Aggregate  Average  Median

 2008  262  165  63  1,246,500  7,555  4,000

THE only yearling catalogued by Oasis Dream in Tuesday's Arqana December Yearling Sale in Deauville proved to be the standout of a quiet day's trading when selling to Agence Equus for €48,000.

But although his price fell well adrift of last year's top mark of €180,000, Arqana had reason to be satisfied with their final sale of the year as the aggregate remained virtually static at €1,244,500 while the medianrose 12.5 per cent to €4,500. The average fell by three per cent to €7,321.

Haras de la Perelle consigned the sale-topper, who is a half-brother to the Grade 2-placed Green Light and out of a sister to Grade 1 winner Jade Hunter.

Earlier in the session, Frederic Sauque, the day's leading buyer, struck for a Lion Heart colt from the family of Exchange Rate who cost €38,000 while Irish pinhooker Con Marnane came away with two colts to take his number of purchases for the year to 55.

Marnane's purchases were topped by an Iffraaj colt out of Listed winner Ethelinda, for whom he paid €36,000. As a French-bred, the colt is eligible for French premiums and therefore is likely to make his next sale ring appearance at Arqana's Saint-Cloud breeze up in May.

"He's out of a mare who won five Listed races," said Marnane. "Although he's a May foal, he's a lovely, big, athletic horse."

Also a possible for the Saint-Cloud breeze up is Marnane's second purchase, a French-bred Shamardal colt who cost €34,000.

"There are a lot of goodhorses on his page," said Marnane of the colt who is closely related to Grade 1 winner Golden Apples. "He's a February foal and very athletic. For me, these colts were the standouts of the day."

He added: "Hopefully we'll have a good spring next year. Some of mine will be nominated for both the Breeze Up and Racing Post Yearling Bonus, which should make them very attractive to buyers."

Later in the session, the€34,000 mark was again reached by Grove Stud's Hawk Wing half-sister to Les Fazzani, who was sold to Xavier Nakkachdji.
