WAVEBAND (4 f Exceed And Excel - Licence To Thrill by Wolfhound)

Breeder: Stratford Place Stud

DAVID Barron sent out the winner of the Cleves Stakes for the second year running when Waveband, a 36,000gns purchase by David Redvers at the 2010 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, held off Anne Of Kiev (by Oasis Dream) to score by a neck.

Victory saw Waveband become the 13th stakes winner in the northern hemisphere by Darley's Exceed And Excel. The son of Danehill enjoyed a good season in Europe in 2010 with five stakes winners to his credit including the two-year-olds Electric Waves and Klammer.

Waveband is bred to be quick. Out of Stratford Place Stud's homebred 5f winner Licence To Thrill, later a stalwart mare for the stud, she is a half-sister to five winners including last season's Group 2 King George Stakes runner-up Group Therapy (by Choisir) and the Group 3-placed Classic Encounter (by Lujain).

Mark Johnston's Halifax stepped up on his debut to take the 1m4f maiden from favourite Jacobs Son. Monster Munchie, a rare European-trained member of Deep Impact's first crop, ran third.

Bred by Rabbah and purchased by Johnston for 80,000gns as a yearling, the son of Halling is out of the Lion Cavern mare Lady Zonda and a half-brother to Fillies Mile and Ribblesdale Stakes heroine Hibaayeb. Further back, it is the family of Oh So Sharp.
