American Post denied first Group 1 winner

IN 2004, American Post was gifted a lucky victory in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains when the likely winner, Antonius Pius, veered into the fence. However, there was nosuch lucky ending for his daughter, Liliside, in Sunday's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches after interference saw her demoted from first to sixth.

Special Duty was awarded the race and thereby picked up her second Classic in the stewards room while Baine, a first crop daughter of Country Reel, took second.

Had Liliside kept the race, the Francois Rohaut-trained filly would have been a first Group winner for American Post, who ironically carried the colours of Special Duty's owner-breeder Prince Khalid Abdulla and was trained by Criquette Head-Maarek.

The champion French two-year-old of 2003, American Post won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and Racing Post Trophy. The son of Bering started his three-year-0ld campaign with an easy victory in the Prix de Fontainebleau before landing the Poulains. After finishing unplaced in the Epsom Derby and Prix du Moulin, he was retired to Haras d'Etreham where he has sired five Listed winners from three crops of racing age.

Bred by P. Lepeudry in France, Liliside is a half-sister to the Group 3-placed The Wise Lady, herself dam of Listed winner Melodyman, and out of Miller's Lily, a placed daughter of Miller's Mate.

Special Duty is from the penultimate crop of US champion two-year-old Hennessy, who died while on shuttle duty in Argentina in 2007.

The son of Storm Cat left behind seven Group/Grade 1 winners including the brilliant two-year-old Johannesburg.

Special Duty hails from one of Juddmonte's most successful families as the first foal of a sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Sightseek. Juddmonte campaigned another member of this family, Etoile Montante, to Group 1 success while further back, it is also the family of leading young US sire Pollard's Vision.
