Lilac out to avenge
dam's defeat in Pouliches

PRIX de la Grotte heroine Golden Lilac will attempt to avenge the defeat of her dam, Grey Lilas, when lining up in today's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.

Grey Lilas, who carries the same Gestut Ammerland colours as her daughter, ran second in the 2004 renewal to Torrestrella en route to a victory over the colts in the Prix du Moulin. Golden Lilac is the mare's second foal following the German winner Grey Lily (by Boreal) and represents the highly successful Galileo-Danehill cross responsible for Frankel and Teofilo.

Another filly bidding to go one better than her dam is Sheikh Mohammed's Listed-placed Etive, who was bred by Darley out of the 2002 runner-up Firth Or Lorne. In turn, she is out of the 1989 1,000 Guineas second Kerrea.  Etive is by Elusive Quality, also the sire of Elusive City, who could sire his second Pouliches winner today in Mixed Intention.

However, few fillies own such a strong Classic background as Sheikh Hamdan's homebred Maqaasid. By Green Desert, she is out of a half-sister to 1,000 Guineas heroine Sarayir, herself a half-sister to Nashwan and Nayef.  Maqaasid upheld the family tradition by running third in the 1,000 Guineas last time out.

Wild Wind, meanwhile, is a great-granddaughter of the brilliant miler Miesque, winner of the 1987 Pouliches. The daughter of Danehill Dancer cost John Magnier €260,000 as a yearling.

A big double could be in store for Iffraaj, who is represented by Italian 1,000 Guineas winner Espirita in addition to Wootton Bassett in the Poulains. The filly was a relatively inexpensive yearling purchase at €37,000.

However, she is beaten on that score by Nova Hawk, a daughter of Hawk wing bred in Epsom by Ermyn Lodge Stud who was sold to MAB Agency for 18,000gns, and Mixed Intention, who was sold by breeder Oghill House Stud as a yearling for €13,000 to Tradexia Ltd.
