Ascot hope Star Witness to stand at Widden

GROUP 1-winning Australian sprinter Star Witness will stand at Widden Stud inNew South Wales later this year – after his final racing assignments, which are likely to include a raid on Royal Ascot in June.

The three-year-old colt will become one of the first sons of former Cheveley Park Stud residentStarcraft to stand at stud. He is out of the Lion Hunter mare Leone Chiara, a Group 3-winning sister to Australian Group 2 winner Chinchilla Rose.

Trained by Danny O’Brien for Alma Vale Bloodstock, Star Witness won one of Australia’s most prestigious juvenile events, the Blue Diamond Stakes, last February. He doubled his Group 1 tally in the Coolmore Stud Stakes over 6f in October and ran second to the brilliant Black Caviar in the Group 1 Patinack Classic one weeklater.

Star Witness is set for a rematch with Black Caviar in the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington next month before taking on the world’s best sprinters at Royal Ascot.

Widden Stud’s Anthony Thompson told “He's a colt we have been watching for some time and we feel he is a perfect addition to our roster.

“As a Group One winner of the Blue Diamond at two and then the Coolmore Stud Ascot Vale Stakes at three, he has won important sire-making races.

“He is the first colt in a decade to win a Group 1 at two and add another Group 1 at three in the same year, which puts him in the same league as Redoute's Choice.”
