Leading German filly Vanjura put down

VANJURA, one of the best German fillies to have raced this century, had to be put down on Wednesday following injuries sustained during a routine veterinary examination.

The five-year-old daughter of Areion was owned by her breeder Matthias Barth, also the judge at Hoppegarten racecourse, and was trained throughout her career by Roland Dzubasz at Hoppegarten.

She won 11 of her 18 starts, including five Group races, for total earnings of €649,100. Although she won races at distances from 6f to 1m3f, her best trip was a mile and she ran with distinction in Group 1 events at this distance, notably when a short neck second to Rio De La Plata in the 2010 Premio Vittorio Di Capua.

She twice won the valuable Istanbul Trophy at the big Turkish international meeting, and ended her career by winning the Group 2 Premio Ribot.

She had been retired from racing and was due to visit Shamardal.
