Claiborne stallion Private Terms dies aged 25

PRIVATE TERMS, sire of Grade 1 winners Afternoon Deelites and Soul Of The Matter, was put down due to the infirmities of old age at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky last week.

The son of Private Account had been pensioned from stud duties since 2006.

Out of the Bold Ruler mare Laughter, Private Terms was bred and raced by Stuart Janney Jr, and trained by Charlie Hadry.

After winning all of his seven starts, including victories over Seeking The Gold in both the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes and Grade 2 Gotham Stakes, he started favourite for the 1988 Kentucky Derby. However, he finished ninth to the filly Winning Colors in the race.

Private Terms entered stud at Claiborne in 1990 as the winner of 12 of his 17 starts and earnings of just under $1.25m.

His headline progeny are Afternoon Deelites, winner of the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity Stakes and Grade 1 Malibu Stakes, and Soul Of The Matter, who scored in the Grade 1 Super Derby and ran second to Cigar in the inaugural Dubai World Cup. Both horses were bred and raced by songwriter Burt Bacharach.

Daughters of Private Terms have produced Grade 3 Hawthorne Derby winner Proceed Bee and Layla's Hero, who won two Listed contests, the Rockingham Stakes and the Doncaster Stakes, last season at two for trainer David Nicholls.
