Keeneland September Sale - day 7 highlights

DUE to a change in format, the opening session of Book Three of the Keeneland September Sale is the firstone to correspond to previous sales numbers. A total of 418 horses were offered during the sale's seventh session with 284 selling for a gross of $16,636,500, a significant rise from the $11,091,800 grossed by the 277 sold a year ago.

The average price of $58,579 was up nearly 30 per cent from the 2009 average of $40,043. This year's median is almost double last year's $27,000 and stood at $50,000.

Latent Heat on fire

Latent Heat was the leading sire with more than two sold at the seventh session as his first crop yearlings raised a gross of $320,000. The Grade 1-winning son of Maria's Mon stands at Woods Edge Farm in Kentucky for $8,500.

Cam Allard paid $230,000 for the most expensive of his progeny, a colt by Eightyfivebroadst who is half-sister to the multiple Group 2 winner Lear Spear.

Another son of Latent Heat went to Northwest Stud Stable Inc for $90,000. The Wildwife colt is half-brother to black-type-winner R Loyal Man.

Blandford heads European interest

European interest seemed to have dwindled by the seventh session. Blandford Bloodstock spent $130,000 on two yearlings, making them the leading European buyer of Book Three. The most expensive of these was a filly by Medaglia D'Oro who was bought for $80,000. Consigned by Francis and Barbara Valangendonck of Summerfield, the filly is out of Silent Eskimo, a multiple Grade 2 winner who was placed in a Grade 1 and has produced one black-type winner, Silent Fusaichi, from seven other registered foals.

Malibu Moon colt tops at $300,000

A colt by Malibu Moon led the session and was knocked down to Nicorma, as agent for Marc Keller, for $300,000. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Lucy Bassett's Lanark Farm, the colt is out of the Out of Place mare Meditations. The black-type winner is from the same family as French Champion 2-year-old filly Hippodamia.
