Gloomy economy forces Lane's End fee changes

LANE'S END has responded to the economic crisis and the weakened bloodstock market by reducing the 2009 fees it had announced for its stallions earlier this month.

The William Farish-owned farm, which recently confirmed it would stand Dubai World Cup winner Curlin, had originally released its fees for next year on November 4 – two days into the 15-day long Keeneland November breeding stock sale which subsequently concluded with a 46 per cent drop in turnover.

The most notable fee cuts have been applied to A.P. Indy, who is reduced to $250,000 having stood at $300,000 every season since 2002, and Curlin’ssire Smart Strike, whose fee has been adjusted downwards by $25,000.

Kingmambo, now the stud's joint-dearest stallion, and Lemon Drop Kid are among the sires whose fees have not been altered.

Farish said: “After reviewing the recent yearling and mixed sales results, as well as the current economic environment, I am announcing a further reduction in many of our 2009 stud fees for the Lane’s End stallions and we will be offering “stands and nurses” on all stallions.

“Lane’s End has always carefully monitored the size of our stallions’ books and, in an effort to increase market value for our clients, we will remain sensitive to this issue.”

The stud also confirmed that all existing contracts would be adjusted to reflect the new fees.
