Lope De Vega emulates Shamardal in Poulains

THEprogeny of second crop sires dominated the finish of the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp on Sunday.

In denying Dick Turpin by half-a-length, Lope De Vega became a first European Group 1 winner by Shamardal, himself successful in this race in 2005.

The son of Giant's Causeway has already sired a Group 1 winner from his first Australian crop of runners in Faint Perfume. Lope De Vega's victory at Longchamp took the stallion's worldwide tally of stakes winners to 12.

Dick Turpin, a son of Arakan, pressed the winner all the way to the line to take second. Shamalgan, a son of another Giant's Causeway second crop sire,Footstepsinthesand, was another one-and-a-half lengths away in third.

A Gestut Ammerland homebred, Lope De Vega is out of a mare by Vettori and therefore inbred 3x3 to Machiavellian.

His dam, Lady Vettori, was successful in the 1999 Prix du Calavados and ran third in the Prix Marcel Boussac. Lope De Vega is her fifth winner from as many runners and follows the Group 3 winner Bal De La Rose (by Cadeaux Genereux) as her second at stakes level.
