Lavirco, sire of Mikael D'Haguenet, dies

THE French National Stud has reported the death of Deutsches Derby hero Lavirco at the age of 16.

The son of Konigsstuhl was put down on Monday after suffering problems with swallowing and his digestive system.

Lavirco was the leading German three-year-old of 1996 after winning the country's counterparts of the 2,000 Guineas and Derby, as well as the Group 1 Europa-Preis.

Initially retired to German stud Gestüt Fährhof, where he was bred and in whose colours he raced, Lavirco was transferred to the French National Studs in 2002.

His best progeny on the Flat include German Group 2 scorer Fight Club and multiple Listed winner Soterio, but he is arguably best known for the exploits of his progeny in the National Hunt sphere, where he is represented by last season's Ballymore Novices' Hurdle winner Mikael D'Haguenet and smart hurdler Fenix.
