Some return for Cheveley as Kingsgate flies in Audi

KINGSGATE Native provided some return for Cheveley Park Stud on Thursday when turning in an impressive display to take the Audi Stakes by two and three-quarter lengths.

It was only the second start for the son of Mujadil following an unsuccessful stint as a stallion for the Newmarket-based operation.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old sat just off the early pace set by Kevin Ryan's pair Jargelle and Rievaulx World and quickened impressively in the closing stages to see off Total Gallery (16-1) in second and 8-1 chance Inxile inthird. All three were drawn lowest against the stands' side rail.

Jockey Ryan Moore said of the 7-1 winner: "He travelled really good and we didn't have much room for a few strides, but he quickened up well and put it to bed.

"He gave me a good feel, I think we were in the best place [with the draw] but he did it well."

Cheveley Park acquired the breeding rights to Kingsgate Native from owner John Mayne following his success in the Nunthorpe Stakes in 2007, and the colt went on to justify that decision with a victory in the Golden Jubilee Stakes the following season under the care of John Best.

He was retired at the end of last season to the stud at a fee of £7,500. However, he unfortunately proved to be infertile with none of the 32 mares he covered during the first half of the season tested in foal and was sent back into training.

Chris Richardson, chief executive of owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: "It was disappointing he was unable to fulfil his commitments at stud but we're thrilled he's come back having been off such a long time.

"It's frustrating and disappointing [the stallion failure] but luckily we had the option to come back. All being well it'll be the Nunthorpe next."
