Minton's purchase of the brother to Sesenta tops Day 2 at Fairyhouse

A prolific purchasing David Minton secured a €60,000 King’s Theatre brother to the talented Sesenta to head the yearling section of the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale yesterday.

The second day of the sale was largely given over to yearlings and this section was able to keep pace with and, in parts improve, on last year’s returns. Some 88 less yearlings came under the hammer this year and this saw the turnover drop by 16 per cent to €1,059,000. The average witnessed a fractional decline at €11,771,but the median did grow by 20 per cent to €7,200 and the clearance rate improved from 45 to 60 per cent.

Taking centre stage was the aforementioned son of King’s Theatre, who was sold by the famed Cork nursery Ballincurrig House Stud on behalf of his breeder Michael Carroll. The gelding is an own-brother to Sesenta who is best remembered for her victory in the 2009 Ebor Handicap at York.

“I’ve bought him for Dai Walters who has a couple of nice, young King’s Theatres, including Speed Master who was an impressive winner of his first hurdle race at Southwell just a few minutes after I bought this horse,” commented Minton, who was also acting for Walters when giving €37,000 for a Robin Des Champs gelding from Rathmore Stud out of an own-sister to Celestial Gold.

This yearling sale has also been a happy hunting ground for leading owner Trevor Hemmings and it was here in 2002 that hebought subsequent John Smith’s Grand National hero Ballabriggs. Minton picked up a total of eight yearlings for Hemmings and these were headed by a €36,000 son of Motivator.

“The Motivator is a lovely horse. He’s not typical of what Trevor buys, but he looks like he’s going to be a fine type for three-year-old bumpers when he gets to the that stage,” reflected Minton.
