Akarem purchased by footballer Pizarro

FORMER Chelsea footballer Claudio Pizarro has purchased the Karl Burke-trained Listed winner Akarem, according to reports.

The eight-year-old is expected to begin his stallion career in the 2010 southern-hemisphere breeding season at Pizarro's Haras El Catorce in the player's native Peru.

Pizarro has enjoyed success as an owner in Britain, with the Marco Botti-trained Oh So Sharp Stakes heroine Raymi Coya carrying his colours.

A son of Kingmambo, Akarem was bred by Kilcarn Stud out of Blandford Stakes runner-up Spirit Of Tara, herself a sister to Salsabil and a half-sister to Marju.

His half-brother Echo Of Light was a Group 2 winner in France for Godolphin, and now stands at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket.

Akarem was purchased by Shadwell Estates for €500,000 at the 2002 Goffs Orby sale and began his career trained by Kevin Prendergast in Ireland, before being sold and transferred to Karl Burke at four.

Burke saddled Akarem to score a Listed double at five, in the Buckhounds Stakes and the Braveheart Stakes. In total the horse he won five of his 44 starts on the Flat and one of his seven starts over jumps, for earnings of over £130,000.
