Six-time Grade 1 winner Buena Vista retired

SUPERSTAR racemare Buena Vista, who landed her sixth Grade 1 win in last month's Japan Cup,has been retired after finishing only seventh behind Orfevre in Sunday's Arima Kinen.

Sent off second favourite for the Nakayama highlight, the five-year-old raced just off the pace but had nothing left for the final sprint.

After the race, the Japanese horse of the year was given a retirement ceremony in front of a crowd of 60,000 who stayed behind after racing to pay tribute to her.

Buena Vista goes to the paddocks at Northern Farm, whereshe is likely to be covered by King Kamehameha.

Shunsuke Yoshida, of owners Sunday Racing, thanked the crowd for their support. "Today's defeat doesn't detract from her brilliant run of six Grade 1 wins," he said. "I want to say thank you to all of her connections but now she will start a brand new life as a broodmare and she will have her first runners in 2015."

Trainer Hiroyoshi Matsuda added: "I'm just relieved she ran and came backwithout any incident. She has give us some wonderful memories."

Buena Vista, a daughter of Special Week, was a Grade 1 winner in each of her four seasons on the track, taking Japan's only juvenile race for fillies in 2008 before landing the Oka Sho (1,000 Guineas)/Yushun Himba (Oaks) double the following year.

In 2010 she won the Victoria Mile and Tenno Sho (Autumn) before suffering one of the most controversial decisions in the history of Japanese racingwhen she was demoted from first place for interference in the Japan Cup under Christophe Soumillon.

Rose Kingdom, who was awarded the race, was only ninth behind Buena Vista when she made amends in last month's running of Japan's most coveted international contest.
