CLEVER COOKIE recorded his third win in succession as he eased to victory in the Grade 2 2m2f novice hurdle.

The Peter Niven-trained seven-year-old holds an entry for the County Hurdle at Cheltenham but his trainer admitted he is unlikely to head the festival, with Aintree a more realistic target.

"I was a bit worried about the ground," said Niven, who rode more winners at Kelso than any other jockey during the 1990s.

"He wants better ground, and Wilson [Renwick, jockey] has said he's gone round there hating it, but his class has got him through it.

"He'll probably go to Aintree next for the better ground, he's only in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and I don't think he's ready for it yet mentally."

Clever Cookie was always travelling well and moved smoothly into the lead after jumping the second-last flight before going on to win by eight lengths as the 13-8 favourite from Fergall.
