Keeneland set for trimmed January Sale

A TOTAL of 1,753 horses have been catalogued for the 2010 Keeneland January  Sale, which will be held on January 11-15.

The figure marks a 26 per cent decrease in catalogue size from 2009, when 2,379 horses were entered. A total of 1,712 entries made it to the ring, where 1,338 were sold for an aggregate of $32,824,000 - less than half of the 2008total. The average also suffered, falling 53 per cent to $24,532.

Grade 1 winner Island Fashion and the Grade 3-placed Almonsoon shared top billing, selling for $950,000 apiece.

Catalogued in this year's sale are 730 broodmares, 691 yearlings, 254 racing or broodmare prospects, 77 horses of racing age, and one share in Monarchos.

"The January Sale offers a particularly good selection of short yearlings," said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's Director of Sales. "Given the strength of November weanling sales, it will provide another opportunity for the market to move forward as the industry continues to adjust to the new market reality."

The catalogue will be available online from December 8 while print catalogues will be mailed from December 21.
