THE fourth session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Lexington, Kentucky, provided further cause for optimism with gains in average and median.

Although not strictly comparable to last year's results due to the new format (Book 2 has been doubled to cover four days), there was encouragement to be had through the 17 per cent rise in average to $121,730 and 13 per cent rise in median to $85,000.

The sale ring burst into life just after lunchtime when Craig Bernick of Glen Hill Farm and Shadwell Estates paid $700,000 and $500,000 for yearlings by Malibu Moon and Dynaformer within the space of ten minutes.

Bernick took over the running of Glen Hill Farm, a Florida-based operation owned by his grandfather Leonard Lavin, in 2008. Since then he has been actively pursuing well-bred fillies as potential broodmare prospects, and went one step further to achieving that goal with the $700,000 purchase of a Malibu Moon filly out of the Grade 3-placed Erhu offered by Elm Tree Farm.

"It was more than we wanted to pay," he said of the filly who is likely to join trainer Todd Proctor, "but after watching the sale and seeing how popular she was, we figured she would be around that mark. We try to buy well-bred fillies - it's a good time to buy into good families - and we're a big fan of Malibu Moon.

"She'll go back to the farm to be let down for 30 days before we break her in."

Of the sale, Bernick added: "It's sort of choppy but then you'd have to expect that with a mixture of Book 1 and 2 horses in one catalogue."

European buyers maintained a solid presence with the BBA Ireland, Blandford Bloodstock, Kilminfoyle House Stud, MAB Agency, Meadowlands Stud and David Redvers each making purchases.
