Keeneland breeze-up shows "good strength"

LIKE many other auctions this year, good horses sold well while the rest of the market struggled during the Keeneland April Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale on  Monday. As a result, key economic indicators were down slightly when compared to 2010.

Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables was active at the top end of the market, purchasing the top two selling lots. The operation bought a son of Indian Charlie for $625,000 as well as a War Front colt for $485,000. The Indian Charlie colt was consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds, agent. He is out of the A.P. Indy mare Teenage Temper.

"He is a real pretty horse," said Jackson's agent, John Moynihan. "Hopefully he can go on to do some great things this time next year. The price was high, but I liked the horse so I just went on and took a shot."

The War Front colt, who is out of the El Prado mare La Prada, was consigned by Wavertree Stables, agent.

The only other horse to sell for at least $475,000 was another by War Front, whose first crop of three-year-olds this year include The Factor and Soldat. This colt was bought by agent Steve Young and is a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Laragh. He was consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent.

"I think a lot of people are here, but at the end of the day, they are landing on the same horses and then they are fighting each other for those," said Brennan when asked about the sale.

In all, 70 horses sold for a gross of $11,564,000 and a median of $130,000. The average was $165,200. Last year, 71 horses sold for a total of $12,013,000, a median of $135,000, and an average of $169,197.

One positive sign was the RNA rate of 32.7%, which was down from 36.6% in 2010.

"There was good strength all the way through and the buyback rate was down, which is good," said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland's director of sales. "I think this sale was as close to last year as humanly possible."
