Clean bill of health for Darley sire Shamardal

SHAMARDAL has made a full recovery from exploratory surgery and will begin covering mares at Kildangan Stud at the start of the breeding season.

The exciting young stallion underwent surgery in December to investigate a fall at Darley’s Kelvinside base in Australia.

Darley’s director of stallions Sam Bullard said: “Shamardal arrived back at Kildangan last Thursday and is in good shape and available for viewing.

“He wasn’t sound after his fall, but he was operated on and nothing untoward was found. He was flushed out and cleaned up and given routine antibiotics, and he is now 100 per cent sound.”

Shamardal has made an outstanding start to his stud career. He is the sire of four individual Group 1 winners, including last season’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club hero Lope De Vega and Racing Post Trophywinner Casamento.

Bullard reported that Shamardal’s book at Kildangan was
full by September, and includes star members of Sheikh Mohammed’s broodmare band including Kazzia, Saoirse Abu and Satwa Queen, and also Wedding Gift, dam of Casamento.

His 2011 covering fee at Kildangan is €50,000.
