Katie Nugent Duathlon set for October 21

FOLLOWING the enormous success of the inaugural Katie Nugent Duathlon in 2011, the family event will take place again on Sunday October 21 at Ballinlough Castle, Clonmellon in County Westmeath.

The Katie Nugent Fund was established by Nick and Alice Nugent in memory of their daughter who died, aged just six, in 2010 from leukaemia. Funds raised will go towards providing psychological and emotional support for patients on St John's Ward at Crumlin Children's Hospital, and their families. Last year's Duathlon featured some 250 participants and raised over €100,000.

The Duathlon is open to anyone aged 16 upwards. Last year saw Midlands triathlon star David Fagan, Harry Fowler and ex-Olympian James Lindsay-Finn battle for the top three places while other familiar faces from the bloodstock world included Eddie and Michael O'Leary, Norman Williamson, Anthony Rogers, James Hanly, Dawn Laidlaw, Gerry Burke, Ken Carroll, Ger Morrin, John Osborne, Franny Woods, Sheena Collins and Jim Ryan

Competitors must complete a 2.5 km run followed by a 22km cycle and then a second circuit of the 2.5km run. The main race starts at 11am.

Race registration takes place from 9am-10.30am and it costs €50 to register as an individual, with a minimum €100 in sponsorship expected. Two person teams (runner and cyclist) can register for €100 and must raise at least €200 in sponsorship.

Once the main race is over, a number of Sunflower Runs for children of various ages and over various distances will also be held, making this an occasion in which the whole family can truly join in.
