Kailani out to emulate Kazzia at Epsom

IF there is one filly bred for glory in today's Oaks at Epsom, it is Godolphin's Pretty Polly Stakes winner Kailani.

The Darley-bred daughter of Monsun is bidding to emulate her dam, the 2002 winner Kazzia, who got off to a great start at stud by producing the Dubai Sheema Classic scorer Eastern Anthem (by Singspiel) in her first year.

In addition, Kailani's damsire, Zinaad, is out of the 1982 Oaks heroine Time Charter.

Godolphin's sole runner faces a powerful squad from Aidan O'Brien's yard including the regally-bred Galileo fillies Maybe, who is out of a Listed-winning three-parts sister to last year's Oaks heroine Dancing Rain, and Kissed, a three-parts sister to Derby hero Pour Moi. Kissed was knocked down at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sale to John Magnier for 900,000gns, a figure only bettered that year by fellow Ballydoyle Oaks entry Was, a three-parts sister to New Approach who was sold for 1.2 million guineas.

O'Brien is also represented by Betterbetterbetter, a daughter of Richard and Roisin Henry's outstanding mare Jude. Betterbetterbetter is the fourth filly out of the mare to contest the Oaks following the placed trio All My Loving, Quarter Moon and Yesterday.

Favourite The Fugue is one filly who could improve again for a step up to 1m4f. Lord Lloyd-Webber's homebred daughter of Dansili is a half-sister to a 2m winner in Susan Stroman and out of a Sadler's Wells filly, Twyla Tharp, who was nosed out in the 2005 Ribblesdale Stakes.

Vow bids to become a first Group 1 winner for her sire, Motivator, and maintain the fine run enjoyed by her late dam, Frog. Brian Haggas' mare is also the dam of tomorrow's Diamond Jubilee Cup hopeful Beaten Up and this season's John Porter Stakes winner Harris Tweed.

2007 Derby winner Authorized is represented by Colima while supporters of the 2006 winner Sir Percy will be cheering on Coquet. The latter was raised in the same paddock at Meon Valley Stud as her stable-mate and rival Shirocco Star.
