First runner a winner for Bwana Charlie

MALAWI, one of 47 juveniles in the first crop of Grade 2 winner Bwana Charlie, became her sire's first winner when running away with the 4½f maiden special weight race at Keeneland yesterday.

Out of the Gilded Time mare Malady, Malawi is trained by Curlin's handler Steve Asmussen for her owner-breeder Heiligbrodt Racing Stables.

Bwana Charlie is a full-brother to last year's Grade 2 Super Derby winner My Pal Charlie and a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Bwana Bull. He won four of his 19 career starts, including the 6f Amsterdam Stakes, a Grade 2 race at Saratoga, at three.

The eight-year-old son of Indian Charlie stands at Journeyman Stud in Florida, for a fee of $5,000 in 2009.
