Joint breeder of Shamardal dies

DR PHILLIP MCCARTHY, co-breeder of Shamardal, has died at his Lexington home aged 58.

His Watercress Farm, which he owned with his friend Fred Hetrich, also bred Graded stakes winners Street Boss, Even The Score, Sir Greeley, Half Ours, La Chunga, Snow Dance and Got The Last Laugh.

McCarthy was a veterinarian who trained specifically in large animal reproductive studies and later applied his knowledge to his work at Walnut Hill Farms, where he was resident veterinarian before becoming farm manager.

He served as a reproductive consultant to stud farms all over the world and his areas of particular expertise included the fetal sexing of mares and diagnosing and treating stallion infertility.
