Stewards deny 'The Rock' a first Classic victory

ROCK Of Gibraltar, via his daughter Jacqueline Quest, was denied a debut European Classic win by the Newmarket stewards, with the 1,000 Guineas instead being awarded to Special Duty, a daughter of former Coolmore stallion Hennessy.

The US-based sire of over 50 stakes winners - among them Johannesburg - died of a heart attack while on stud duty in Argentina in 2007.

Special Duty is the seventh home-bred English Classic winner for Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms, following Zafonic in the 1993 2,000 Guineas, Wince in the 1999 1,000 Guineas, Quest For Fame and Commander In Chief in the 1990 and 1993 Derby, Reams Of Verse in the 1997 Oaks, and Toulon in the 1991 St Leger.

She comes from a Juddmonte family that has had success on both sides of the Atlantic: her dam Quest To Peak, a daughter of Juddmonte stallion Distant View, is a full-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Sightseek and a half-sister to another Grade 1 winner in Tates Creek, while her granddam Viviana was a Listed winner in France.

Further back this is the family of Pollard's Vision, sire of Blind Luck, and Etoile Montante, one of the leading European juvenile fillies of 2002.

Had Jacqueline Duty kept the race she would have been a first European Classic winner for Rock Of Gibraltar who stands at Coolmore Stud at a 2010 fee of €22,500.

The filly was a €60,000 buy  at the Goffs Million Sale when recruited by John McKeever forher owner Noel Martin.

Like Special Duty - and indeed 2,000 Guineas winner Makfi, and Kentucky Oaks winner Blind Luck -  she is a first foal, and is out of the Croco Rouge mare Coquette Rouge, who won twice and is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Regime, and the talented juvenile Salut d'Amour.

The second dam Juno Madonna is by Sadler's Wells and is closely related to the King George Stakes winner Title Roll.
