Avonbridge records
first stakes winner

DESPITE racing with the choke out during the early stages, Iver Bridge Lad ran on well to take the Listed National Stakes at Sandown on Friday afternoon to become the first stakes winner for freshman sire Avonbridge.

The John Ryan-trained colt denied joint-favourite Di Stefano by half a length with the other joint favourite, Angel's Pursuit, another half a length back in third.

Iver Bridge Lad cost Ryan just 1,000gns as a yearling at last year's Tattersalls October Sale. Bred by Julian Wilson, he is the second foal out of the 1m2f winner Fittonia, a daughter of Ashkalani. Fitonnia has a yearling filly by Pastoral Pursuits, a foal by Piccolo and is back in foal to Avonbridge.

Iver Bridge Lad is one of six winners in Britain and Ireland by Prix de l'Abbaye winner Avonbridge. The son of Averti stands at Whitsbury Manor Stud for £3,500.
