Islington's top-level wins included a Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf

Ballymacoll blue hen Hellenic dead aged 24

BALLYMACOLL STUD'S hugely successful broodmare Hellenic has been euthanized at the age of 24 following chronic arthritis.

A daughter of Darshaan, Hellenic won the Ribblesdale and Yorskhire Oaks and was second to Snurge in the St Leger. She produced four-time Group/Grade 1 winner Islington and Greek Dance, a Group 1 winner in Germany who was runner-up at the top level in Britain, Ireland and France on four occasions.

Both are by Sadler's Wells, a cross which also produced Ascot Gold Cup third Election Day and Group 3 winner New Morning.

Another notable runner out of Hellenic is Mountain High, now a jumps sire on the Coolmore roster. The son of Danehill landed the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and was runner-up in the Hardwicke and Princess of Wales's Stakes.

Hellenic produced 14 foals of which nine ran and eight were winners. Ballymacoll Stud retains four of her daughters: Desert Beauty, Islington, Olympienne and La Divina.
