Irish National Stud students graduate

ALL 22 students who took part in this year's Irish National Stud were awarded the stud's diploma last Friday at the Thoroughbred Breeding Course Graduation Ceremony, with seven students achieving Honours of 85 per cent or above.

The Gold Medal for overall first place was awarded to Jannicke Sjuls Thoresen from Norway. Jannicke worked for three years at Meridian Stud in Norway before gaining experience with trainers Roy Arne Kvisla in Norway and Matthew Laurie in Australia. Jan was sponsored on the course by Kirsten Rausing.

Jan hopes to take a course in sports journalism and may complete a Southern Hemisphere breeding season.

The Silver Medal was awarded to Patricia Calkins from Ohio. Patricia, who has gained experience with Fasig-Tipton, Four Star Sales, John O'Shea Racing and Mill Ridge Farm, has been selected for this year's Darley Flying Start Programme.

Hayley Sullivan from Maynooth finished in third place overall.

First prize for portfolio assignments was awarded to Georg Ernst from Germany while Sarah Fishback from Kentucky won first place in the Farriery exam. Sarah has also been selected for the Darley Flying Start Programme.

Erin Brett from New Zealand was awarded first place for the Stable Management component of the exam.

The John Durkan Award went to Waterford native Paul Mc Grath, who is set to start a placement with Brian Meehan in August.
