Zebedee shows winning Spirit inMolecomb

Betfair Molecomb Stakes (Group 3), Goodwood 5f

ZEBEDEE (gr c Invincible Spirit - Cozy Maria, by Cozzene)

Breeder: Hascombe & Valiant Studs

ZEBEDEE came wide and late under a confident Richard Highes to steal the Molecomb Stakes from Stone Of Folca, beaten a neck into second, with Choose Wisely a head back in third.

Zebedee's trainer Richard Hannon and owner Julie Wood - who bought the colt for 70,000gns through Peter Doyle at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale - will hope that he emulates the last Molecomb Stakes winner by Invincible Spirit, Fleeting Spirit, who went on to strike at Group 1 level by winning the July Cup at four.

Invincible Spirit, the leading first-season sire in 2006 with a record 35 individual winners, stands at the Irish National Stud in County Kildare at a fee of €45,000.

Following his first season with runners - in which this year's two-year-olds were conceived - Invincible Spirit's fee leapt from €10,000 to €35,000.

In 2007 Invincible Spirit sired Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club hero Lawan and so the following year - when this autumn's sale yearlings were bred - his fee rocketed to €75,000.

Bred by Hascombe and Valiant Studs, Zebedee is the fourth foal out of the Cozzene mare Cozy Maria, who finished placed in two Listed races - the Valiant Stakes and the Lupe Stakes.

Cozy Maria and Zebedee are the only two black type-getters under Cozy Maria's dam Mariamme, but Mariamme is a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Turf heroine Miss Alleged.

Cozy Maria also had a yearling colt by Oasis Dream and was covered by Manduro last year.
