Monarchos recovering from colic surgery

MONARCHOS, who clocked the second fastest time in the Kentucky Derby when winning the Run for the Roses in 2001, is recovering from colic surgery performed at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute near Lexington, Kentucky, on Tuesday.

The 13-year-old grey son of Maria's Mon retired to Claiborne Farm in Kentucky and moved to Charles Nuckols III's Nuckols Farm for the 2008 breeding season. His 2011 stud fee is $6,000.

Nuckols said: "The surgery consisted of straightening multiple twists of the small intestine, but there was no sectioning required and barring any complications [he] is expected to recover and begin servicing mares again in three to four weeks.

"We are of course concerned for the horse, but extremely encouraged by his prognosis."

Monarchos - who joined Secretariat as the only horse to run the Kentucky Derby in under two minutes - is sire of Madison Stakes, Humana Distaff and Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Informed Decision and this month's Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap winner Win Willy.
