Commander lands Gold Cup for Flemensfirth

In some ways Imperial Commander's Cheltenham Gold Cup win could be viewed as a shock, but in terms of his breeding it was perhaps not such a surprise.

He is by the numerically strong sire Flemensfirth, a son of Alleged who stands at Beeches Stud in Ireland for €10,000, and has produced horses of the calibre of Tidal Bay and Joe Lively. Like Tidal Bay, Imperial Commander is out of a mare by Le Moss.

Bred by Laurence Flynn, Imperial Commander was sold for €4,000 at Goffs in December 2002 but made €19,000 when put through the same ring a year and a half later.

Imperial Commander, easily the best performer out of his dam Ballinlovane,  is the 14th Irish-bred winner of the meeting.
