Longchamp Listed glory for Fabre-bred Zelimir

ZELIMIR took the transition from handicaps to stakes company in his stride with a clear-cut victory in Thursday's Listed Prix du Pont-Neuf for three-year-olds over 7f at Longchamp.

The winner is trained by Andre Fabre and was bred in America by his wife Elisabeth Fabre, also the colt's registered owner.

Zelimir had won a 1m handicap at Longchamp last time out, his first victory from seven attempts. The Prix du Pont-Neuf - which he won by one and a half lengths from the Whipper filly Miss Fifty - was his first start in a black-type contest.

Zelimir is by Grand Slam, a resident of Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky where he commands a fee of $15,000.

Grand Slam, a dual Grade 1-winning juvenile by Gone West and from the family of Alydar, is sire of Grade 1 winners Cajun Beat (Breeders' Cup Sprint) and Visionaire (King's Bishop Stakes).

Zelimir is the fourth foal out of Zinziberine, a daughter of Zieten and out of a sister to dual Prix Royal-Oak winner Amilynx. Fabre trained Zinziberine to win the Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at two and run fifth in the Prix de la Foret at three.

Zinziberine has also produced Zanzibari by Smart Strike, winner of the Group 3 Prix de Cabourg and a new recuit to the Haras du Mesnil in France at a fee of €1,000 this year.

Zinziberine also has a yearling filly by Proud Citizen.
