Second jumps Grade 1 winner for Captain Rio

HOLLO LADIES sprang a 25-1 surprise to win the Future Champions Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday, becoming the second Grade 1 winner for a sire who, at first glance, looks an unlikely rich source of jumping talent.

The Noel Meade-trained four-year-old is, along with Jumbo Rio, who won the Ballymore Champion Four-Year-Old Hurdleat Punchestown in May, a member of the first crop of high-class sprinter Captain Rio, a son of Nunthorpe Stakes winner Pivotal.

The highlight of Captain Rio's career came when he trounced the opposition by eight lengths to take the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte as a two-year-old.

As well as Jumbo Rio and Hollo Ladies, the stallion has sired seven Flat stakes winners from three crops of racing age headed by Il Quello Veloce, who won the Group 1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes over 7f in New Zealand, and the Irish Group 3 winners Capt Chaos and Philario.

Captain Rio wil command a fee of €5,000 at Ballyhane Stud in County Carlow in 2010. The sire has the chance of a third Grade 1 winner over jumps when his son Kudu Country, unbeaten in two runs over hurdles, contests the Coral Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow on Monday.

Hollo Ladies was bred by John Fagan's Deerpark Stud in County Meath and is one of five winners out of Lace Flower, a winning Old Vic half-sister to the German Listed-winning sprinter Liftoff.

Lace Flower has a 2008 filly by Majestic Missile and was barren to Diamond Green in 2009

Leopardstown's card on Sunday also saw the French-bred Mansonnien gelding Golden Silver claim the scalp of Tranquil Sea to take the Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase.

The seven-year-old was bred by Noel Pelat out of the Glint Of Gold mare Gold Or Silver. Prior to Golden Silver, she had crossed successfully with Mansonnien to produce Gran Corsa di Siepi di Roma Hurdle winner Or Ou Argent and the Listed-placed jumper Bielo Viesa.
