Champion Flanders dies after paddock accident

US champion Flanders has died following complications from laminitis after a paddock accident at Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

The 18-year-old daughter of Seeking the Gold was purchased out of the Overbrook dispersal at Keeneland in November for $400,000 by John Magnier. She recently foaled a colt by Bernardini, which has been placed on a nurse mare.

Flanders won three Grade 1 races in the colours of her breeder, the late W. T. Young, including the 1994 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, in which she memorably outbattled Serena's Song despite suffering a career ending injury.

She also finished first past the post in the Grade 1 Matron Stakes but was disqualified after a post race test revealed the banned substance isoxsuprine in her system. Flanders ended that year as the champion two-year-old filly.

Flanders got off to a brilliant start at stud, producing champion and multiple Grade 1 winner Surfside, a daughter of Seattle Slew, in her first year. She went on to produce seven other winners including the stakes-placed A P Indy colt Flanders Fields.

HOLIDAY Runner, last year's $2.15 million Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale-topper, died last month due to foaling complications.

The Grade 2-placed daughter of Meadowlake died a day after foaling a Tiznow colt.

Holiday Runner was purchased by Frank and Jane Lyon of Summer Wind Farm in Kentucky to replace Aragorn's dam Onaga, who died the same week that her yearling colt byStorm Cat topped the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale at $2.8 million.

Two of Holiday Runner's three foals of racing age are stakes performers including Seventh Street, who was campaigned by Sheikh Mohammed to win last season's Grade 1 Apple Blosson Handicap and Grade 1 Ruffian Handicap.
